Lamb Photos Shetland ewes are excellent mothers, and will take turns minding the "creche" while the other mothers graze. Any attempts by a lamb to steal milk from the wrong mother are met by only a nudge. Even our rams don't seem to mind lambs clambering over them! And foxes best beware - Shetland ewes sleep with the lambs protected between themselves and a stone wall, or with their chins on top of the lambs. In 2006 we had a very high proportion of twins, a sure sign of healthy, happy sheep. The lambs are on their feet and looking for breakfast within minutes of being born, and then spend their days tormenting their mothers for just one more drink, and chasing each other up and down the the stone embankment at the back of the lambing field.
